probably an obscene number of photos of two possibly over-indulged children for one blog post. but what the hell. it was christmas!
the great stocking haul started, according to my camera metadata, at 6.56am, which i guess could have been worse. though seeing as i didn’t get to bed until after 2am, i would have preferred the 9ish of a couple of years ago.
there are literally just bits in these now huge stockings – they were great when the kids were toddlers and got lots of plastic bits – but now the SD cards, the headphones, the pens and other bits got a bit lost.
we have a slightly cruel family custom, in that presents are opened after lunch. between the brandy eggnog and my timekeeping skills, lunch can often be a good way into the afternoon and so we relent and allow them one (generally carefully chosen to keep the occupied for a good while) present before lunch.
this year it was a table top connector for alex’s skate ramp for alex, and a new scooter (which alex deeply covets) for phoebe.
i wish her happiness was in focus in this shot but i think you get the general idea.
there were just cheap but effective foam water pistols in their stockings – and as it was too cold to use on each other they set up soldiers on the new table top connector and blasted them. as planned, this kept them occupied for a while. and then the lure of the presents,
and, as ever, the packaging, brought them back in.
new wii songs for guitar hero – that he was finally able to download due to the new sd card, was another distraction.
until lunch. and another disaster averted, thankfully by frank. at 10.38 (i believe the time is recorded on facebook) christmas eve i realised i hadn’t bought crackers. i’d looked at heaps. and rejected them as not quite perfect.
and so with the inner tubes of christmas wrapping paper rolls, his own dreadful jokes, and hats cut out of christmas paper, we had our own special home made crackers. nobody missed the crappy little plastic gifts that they should contain, and we yelled ‘bang’ to compensate for the missing gunpowder!
we had a backwards christmas dinner this year – my olds love their seafood, so i thought we’d have a ham turkey stuffing muffin platter to start..
and then seafood for main. these were the prawns and crayfish, we had moules mariniere and half a side of poached salmon with hollandaise as well as salad and veg, but by then i was too buggered for photos!
my aunt, top and my mum. bunny is 76 and my mum turns 80 this year. pretty good for their age, but after mains mum needed a nap – before presents! so we let the kids open another carefully chosen one each…
these were their main presents this year – alex got harry potter hogwarts, and phoebe, finally (as i think this is the third year she’s asked for one) a ds.
which alex had to check out.
eventually, mum woke, we had presents and dessert, champagne and perhaps we finished off the eggnog as well. which might explain the gap in the photos.
i hope your christmases were happy. my thoughts are turning to the new year now, but i really wanted to wrap up christmas on my blog first. i’ve just been reviewing these photos and have to say that, though not perfect, all of these photos are unedited apart from resizing for publishing on the blog (there’s just too many and i’m just too lazy, and frankly i’m pretty happy with them as they are. i think karen russell’s ‘snapshots’ course may just have been worth it!
